"Out of the bosom of the Air,
Out of the cloud-folds of her garments shaken,
Over the woodlands brown and bare,
      Over the harvest-fields forsaken,
            Silent, and soft, and slow
            Descends the snow."

Snow Flakes
              Longfellow

The predicted storm having missed us I went out to see
what gifts winter had bequeathed me today. It turned
out to be a day for close study rather than sweeping vistas.

"Thus having prepared their buds
against a sure winter
the wise trees
stand sleeping in the cold. "

                             Winter Trees
                                      William Carlos Williams

Beautiful wintry images, Guy! The textures and colors in the birch tree photograph are wonderfully featured. I love the delicacy captured in the following two shots. Great pairing of images and poems!

River birch I suspect but I'm not quite sure, what is it? And that you somehow included William Carlos Williams and John Muir into one post is amazing, two of my favorites. Thanks!

...I love these beautiful winter photos. They convey the stillness of winter...and the color that is hidden behind the grey. I also love the poems. They fit perfectly...

Now to go catch up with the rest of your blog. I have been so busy at work I've neglected my favorite blogs for a week or so. I have to say, without reading all of the next post yet I was already laughing at the cute photos. Oh my gosh....Hemingway Puppy is hysterical!

The close study is always my favorite. You choose such lovely passages, often inviting me to explore poets I'm not familiar with or work of poets I love which I have yet to read. Thank you. I hope all is well in your world. It's almost spring. :) -lené

Hi Lené

Thanks for your comments. It still looks wintery here but the sun is up when we go to work and when we come home so people are a lot more cheerful. I guess spring is in their hearts.

Every time I come here you inspire me to read more poetry! I love both of these and have not read either. Perfect photos to go with them as well. We finally DID get a snow storm and it is still snowing after almost 30 hours! However, the snow is not too deep since at times it was mixed with rain. I am staying warm by the fire and drinking tea.

Hi Kathie

That sounds like a good way to deal with the snow. And if I have inspired you to read more poetry that makes me very happy. I love to look at a picture and then have to start looking at my books or sometimes the net to find a couple lines of poetry to complement it. I also like the fact that when I do that I find other poems or lines that I stockpile until the right picture comes along.

All the best
